Prisoner Ataş held despite rotting of her heart valve

İSTANBUL - Drawing attention that the heart valve of her seriously ill imprisoned daughter, Şivekar Ataş, had deteriorated, Rabia Ataş said: "The ill prisoners should be released."

Şivekar Ataş, who was arrested after being detained in Muş, where he went to visit a friend in Amed in 2016 while he was a university student, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for "being a member of a terrorist organization" as a result of the lawsuit filed against her. Ataş, who remained in many prisons during her detention, is now in Bakırköy Women's Closed Prison. Ataş, who suffered from heart failure, high blood pressure and hernia during the prison period and was therefore on the seriously ill prisoner list, stated that a cyst had formed in her uterus in the last meeting with her family.

Ataş's mother Rabia Ataş demanded that her daughter and all other ill prisoners should be released and treated as soon as possible.

'ŞİVEKAR HAS BEEN ARRESTED DUE TO KURDISH IDENTITY'

Stating that her daughter, Şivekar Ataş, was arrested "because of her Kurdish identity" when she was a university student, mother Ataş said: "After my daughter was arrested, she was first sent to the Sincan Women's Closed Prison. My daughter was exposed to many rights violations during her detention in Sincan. My daughter was transferred to Mersin Tarsus Women's Closed Prison after a 2-year period."

THE OBSTACLE TO THE TREATMENT OF ATAŞ

Stating that her daughter did not have any health problems during the period before she entered the prison, Ataş said: "The current illnesses in my daughter were caused by the bad conditions of the prisons. The prison administration displays a 'hostile approach' towards political prisoners. I had difficulty recognizing her when I saw her. She is experiencing sudden rapid weight loss. She has a heart condition. She has to be taken to the hospital and given her injection every 20 days, but my daughter did not accept this because the prison administration put a solitary cell on the pretext that the prisoners who went to the hospital during the pandemic period should be quarantined. For this reason, she was not treated during the 2-year pandemic period, and in addition, in our last meeting, we learned that 2 cysts were found in her uterus. In any case, the prison administration and the infirmary do not listen to the prisoners, even if they are seriously ill. They want to wait for them to officially die and get rid of them.”

'WE WILL NOT GIVE UP FROM THE SEEKING OF RIGHTS'

Underlining that they will not give up their search for rights until her daughter Şivekar Ataş, Ataş said: "All other ill prisoners should be released. As long as this situation continues, she will resort to various actions and activities if necessary. I called on the President, the Minister of Justice, and all authorized institutions and parties, and demanded the release of the ill prisoners."
