ANKARA - The sentence of Kerim Boran, an 81-year-old seriously ill prisoner in Edirne F-Type Closed Prison, has been cancelled by AKP Leader and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The sentences imposed on Kerim Boran, an 81-year-old seriously ill prisoner in Edirne F-Type Closed Prison, were cancelled by a decree issued by AKP Leader and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan upon the request of the Ministry of Justice.
Kerim Boran and 8 elderly people were sentenced to various penalties in 2021 for taking part in the Justice Commission of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Provincial Organisation and reconciling feuding families.
Boran has been in prison since then and he suffers from various chronic diseases such as heart failure, diabetes, high blood pressure, COPD, asthma, prostate, Parkinson's, vision and hearing loss. On 2 October 2023, the Forensic Medicine Institution (ATK) issued a report stating that Boran is old and bad situation. However, Boran was not released despite this report.
Boran's lawyer applied to the Ministry of Justice within the scope of "Presidential pardon" after this decision. The Ministry wrote to the Presidency on 18 September 2024 with the ATK report and other reports and files including other chronic diseases.
With the decree issued with the signature of President Erdoğan, the ongoing sentences against Boran were cancelled.
Boran is expected to be released.
